One thing a prospective freshman will hear over and over before going off to college is “It’s nothing like high school.” Students never really understand this comment until they are actually on campus.

College is all about becoming an adult and living your life to the best of your ability. Gone are the “popular kids,” and the “cool table” in the cafeteria. You don’t have that freshman hazing scene in college. In high school the frosh are the low kids on the totem pole. In college there are so many orientations, mixers and meet-and-greets that it’s easy to build new friendships before the school year even starts.

Upper-classmen enjoy the fresh faces and new personalities of the freshman crowd. The biggest shocker of all is usually the amount of personal freedom involved in the learning process. In high school Mr. Smith, the English teacher, will hand out a sheet of notes and give a lecture that you are expected to spit back out word for word on the test. In college, Professor Smith will give her lecture an may very well ask for your opinion. There wont be any phone calls if you miss class three days this week and you’ll still be expected to take the test and pass it. There is no one to hold your hand or walk you through your classes. You are there because you want to be and what you get out of it is up to you. Because you pay for the privilege of going to college its up to you to get your money’s worth.

The personal freedom shocker stretches into your social calendar as well. Not only are there a plethora of dances, clubs, organizations, meetings groups and events to choose from nightly but your also faced with your classes and academic responsibilities. Its sometimes hard to know when to put a damper on the nightlife and get back to the books.

In high school, most of the people you attend class with are lifelong residents of the town. People you grew up with. People who have the same beliefs and background that you do. Chances are you go to church with these same people and your parents went to church with their parents. In college it is very likely that you will meet someone from across the state, across the country or across the world. You will hear and see vastly different ideas and cultural stand points than your own. Its a wonderful learning experience and part of what makes your college experience uniquely your own.

The differences in high school and college can be scary, but rest assured it will take no time at all to feel adjusted and comfortable in your new environment. These are the days that will create memories that last a lifetime.

Generally, the best person to do your job search is you. No one understands your criteria and skills better than you do. Furthermore, it is always best to use your own contacts to land a job. However, there are times when it is beneficial to use a job recruiter. A job recruiter has many contacts in numerous professional industries and can help you to match your skills to an employer’s needs. If, for some reason or another, you feel that you may benefit from this kind of service, then perhaps you should consider using a job recruiter.

Many people who are in the middle of their careers decide to get a new job through a recruiter. Perhaps they are simply too busy with their current work to conduct a thorough and proper job search. Alternatively, they may feel that doing their job search on their own might raise suspicion at work and compromise their current positions. If you find yourself in one of these situations, or feel as though it would be best to find a new position through a job recruiter for any other reason, then the following tips should help you out.

- Be sure to use a reputable recruiter. If you have been in the industry for a little while, you will probably already know which recruiters are the best. If you are new to the industry, then do a little research and see if you can’t find which recruiter is the best in your area.

- Be sure to use a recruiter who specializes in your industry. Many job recruiters specialize in specific industries. Some job recruiters focus on the fashion industry. Others work mainly in the sciences. Be sure to use someone who has a good track record of placing people in your industry.

- Make sure that your job recruiter fully understands your experience, your credentials, and your professional trajectory. If your job recruiter does not fully understand your capabilities, then he or she will not be able to do well at finding a good position for you. Furthermore, he or she will not be able to appropriately represent you.

- Make sure that your job recruiter knows exactly what you are looking for in a new job. If your job recruiter does not fully understand the next step that you want to take, then you will wind up going on interviews for jobs that you don’t really want.

A job recruiter can be incredibly helpful if you use him or her in the right ways and at the right time in your career. Before you engage the services of a job recruiter, be sure that you really need that kind of help. It is always best to use your own connections.

College life can be tense and a bit stressful at times. Students who excel in college are self-disciplined and know how to manage their time. The constant managing of time and priorities does not suddenly stop when your vacation starts—it’s an ongoing process.

Here are 10 ways that you can maximize your time when you are off from school:

1. Review what you have learned
Although your classes may all be completed for the quarter (or the semester), it’s not a bad idea to review what you’ve just learned over the course of many weeks. Reread your notes, papers, tests and skim through the books you’ve just read. Finalize the imprinting of fresh information in your mind so that you can retain what you’ve learned over the long term.

2. Read ahead
If you already know what courses you will be taking in the upcoming quarter, start reading ahead. If you are going to have some time to kill, might as well get a jump start on your upcoming classes. Contact your professors and collect copies of syllabi. Purchase your materials and begin reviewing them before your class begins.

3. Go back to your roots and reconnect with family and friends
Go home. Say hi to the family and reconnect with old friends. College isn’t about severing all of your previous ties. Keep up your network and pay the people you love a visit.

4. Stick around and explore the town
Forget about going home. Stick around and explore your college town. Find new places to buy groceries and new bars to frequent. Take a mini-road trip to some nearby destination that you’ve always wanted to see. Take your time off of school as an opportunity to experience your surroundings.

5. Travel
Drive cross-country or travel abroad. See the world, or a tiny piece of it. Take your new outlook on life and expose yourself to different peoples and places. Visit a destination or place of interest that you have just studied. Travel with a partner, in a group, or go venturing off on your own.

6. Get an internship
Find an internship in the field that you are studying. Supplement your classroom work with real life on-the-job training. This way when you graduate, you will already have solid academic and professional experience.

7. Lay the groundwork for future employment.
Explore your career interests. Market yourself and your abilities. Try to find an organization that you want to target for employment once you’ve graduated. Find out what the minimum professional and educational requirements are for the specific job that you are interested in. Take measures to fulfill those requirements before you graduate.

8. Explore the course catalog and schedule of classes
Get lost in the pages of your course catalog. Map out different schedule scenarios. Find out if that class you really want to take is offered in alternate academic years, and then plan your schedule accordingly. Pick a focus in your major and consider all the courses that you’d like to take. You’ll be surprised how quickly your time in school will fly by, so you need to construct a solid schedule.

9. Apply for scholarships
Find some more money. Buy a book or do Internet research. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Each application may seem like a bit of a hassle, but the results could seriously alleviate any financial burdens you may have accrued.

10. Just relax and take a break
Don’t do a damn thing! You’ve spent months cramming, pulling off all-nighters, and wowing you professors with your polished intellectual abilities. You’ve earned a break, so enjoy it, and come back to school refreshed and ready for anything.

If you utilize your vacations properly, you will be a better student. Just remember not to stress out too much. Whether you are in school or not, you are in control of your life, so make the most of it.

Maybe you’re considering getting a degree from an online university. Maybe you’ve just earned one and in preparing to apply for new jobs that will make the most of it, you’re wondering whether or not prospective employers will see your resume and have bad associations with your online degree. In a word, the answer is no.

Employers who require employees to have a college degree care that you have one from somewhere. Traditionally, there are about 20 colleges in the United States (the Ivies and a handful of other prominent schools) that make employers sit up and take notice about where your degree came from. If you did not attend one of these places, you are like most people, who find that the name of their school is less important to their employers than how they performed academically, and what they studied.

In fact, your online degree may set you apart in a positive way from the rest of the pack of applicants. Successfully obtaining your degree online tells prospective employers that you are a person who will get the job done even when no one is looking. Online degrees testify that their recipients are self-motivated individuals who are capable of managing multiple priorities. And whatever job you’re applying for, rest assured that those are two qualities all organizations prize.

Furthermore, online universities are becoming more and more popular. While your online degree can set you apart in the aforementioned ways, you should have no fear that it will stigmatize you. Each day, it becomes more and more likely that the person you sit down to interview with may have attended the same online school that you did!

Another benefit of the online university experience in the eyes of employers is that it is designed in large part for working professionals. The fact that you’ve made it through an online degree program tells your prospective employer that you have had intense exposure to the types of collegial interactions you will face in the working world. Online universities emphasize and develop the ability to work with others, to manage and meet deadlines, and to be responsible for learning on your own. When you consider all of the things a degree from an online university says about you, you should realize that you’re more of a proven commodity, a “safer” hire than recent graduates from brick and mortar universities.

Academic scholarships are an easy way to use your academic success to pay for college. Taking advantage of these can be incredibly easy, provided that you are able and willing to submit applications notifying whomever is awarding scholarships about your academic ability. There are some common mishaps that might keep you from gaining access to that free money.

Review the application entirely. This is the first step in avoiding the disqualification of your application. Read over it before filling or signing anything. Review the requirements to complete, submit the application along with whatever supplemental documentation might be required. This can include, but is not limited to, transcripts, and essays. Make sure that you have plenty of copies of these documents handy to send off with all of your scholarship applications.

Do not confine your eligibility to one scholarship application. Find many academic scholarships for which you might be eligible. Apply for all of them. You might not make the finalist list for one, but you will for others. Give yourself as many opportunities as possible to get that free money!

When you have an application, fill it out completely. Make sure you have read it through and provided complete and accurate information. There are countless applications that are disqualified because the applicant cannot be contacted with the given information. Make sure to be very observant of what you are typing or writing and maybe even ask a friend or family member to proofread the items for you.

Another common mistake when completing applications is to apply for scholarships for which you are not eligible. This wastes your time, the evaluating committee’s time and that certainly won’t get you a scholarship, especially if you do not have the proper required credentials.

Remember, you are trying to apply for an academic scholarship. The application is your chance to shine! Check for completeness, grammar, spelling, accuracy and that you have all the right supporting documentation. Do not include things that have not been required, such as a photo of yourself or a non-essential essay. Many academic scholarships are reviewed by committees of people who review applications. They won’t read anything that isn’t part of the application. The application phase shows that you are organized, punctual and capable of following directions. Show them what you’ve got and they will show you the money!

The information age has ushered in the popularity and acceptance of online correspondence courses and degree programs, and if you are ready to get started, congratulations on scratching the surface! Digging deeper, consider these brief, yet necessary 6 online education, school starting steps to move you forward in pursuit of your goal!

Weigh Your Options
What are your goals? If you are somewhat lost and in need of direction, get busy on any one of several education sites to see what is offered and what might interest you. Believe it or not, getting started in the online education process does not have to be painful!

Accreditation
Possibly one of the most obvious yet overlooked necessities in a potential online education. If you want your degree, diploma or job certificate to amount to what you paid for it, your institution of choice MUST be accredited. You might learn a lot from Leroy’s Online Business School, but if it isn’t an accredited institution there’s a good chance it will come back to bite you in a future business interview!

Choosing a school
There are several schools, colleges, etc. that would love to help you achieve your educational goals for a reasonable fee; however, you need to be specific in searching for what you desire! Do you want a degree in art, business, philosophy or some other field? The more specific you get with your goals, the faster you’ll find the most appropriate fit!

Financial Aid
Do NOT fall into the mind trap that many students do in regards to financial aid! If you don’t have the cash on hand to pay for all of your credits, classes or degree program, it doesn’t mean you have to take out a loan! Look deeply into the world of scholarships! There are many available through government and private organizations, as well as grants and low interest loans that can be paid off at very reasonable rates!

Research
If your education is worthwhile, then it’s worthwhile to be patient in getting started. You may be chomping at the bit, but you need to find as close to a perfect fit as possible! Take time to read about your options and possibilities and subscribe to a quality over quantity philosophy! Contact universities and be sure you are as important to them as you want to be!

Focus
Don’t become easily distracted as your education process begins. Properly dealing with distractions and prioritizing will help create an excellent sense of self discipline that you can use in your research and studies. It is imperative to establish these good habits at the beginning, so your future online educational endeavors are smooth sailing!

Identifying your strengths and weaknesses will help you learn about yourself. Evaluating these skills is a step in the right direction. The more knowledge you have of your capabilities, the better you are to make decisions about your future.

Strengths
Examining your hobbies is a good way to determine your strengths. If you lead a busy life but still find time to cultivate a hobby, then there is something about that hobby that interests you. When you’re interested in a hobby, you tend to be motivated in developing your skills. Take a look at your hobbies. What kind of skills do you use for that hobby? Does your hobby require you to use your hands? Does your hobby require you to calculate math problems? Finding the skills that are needed in your hobby helps you understand your strengths.

Also examine subjects that interest you. Ask yourself why you are interested in particular subjects. Do you love to read about modern art? Do you enjoy watching historical movies? Do you like to play sports? Determine what aspects of these subjects keep you interested. When you identify your interests, you will begin to gather information about your likes and dislikes.

Weaknesses
Identifying your weaknesses is another way for you to identify your strengths and skills. First find out what you’re not good at. Be honest with yourself here. Are you horrible at math? Do you hate to read? Ask yourself these types of questions.

There are two types of weaknesses: weaknesses that should be improved and weaknesses that are dislikes.

After you identify your weaknesses, figure out if they are skills that you need to improve. Just because you are not good at something doesn’t mean you’ll never have to learn those skills. If those skills are needed for the path you want to follow, then by all means spend some time improving those skills.

You will find that some weaknesses are just dislikes. Maybe you’re not good at working in an office environment. This is not necessarily a weakness that needs to be improved. This shows a lack of interest in being cooped up working in an office all day. Don’t force yourself into situations that you don’t like. You may be the type of person that needs to work in the outdoors or in non-office environments such as hospitals or warehouses.

Finding your strengths will help you make decisions about your direction in life. Finding your weaknesses will help you improve your skills but will also help you find your dislikes. You will be much more equipped to make decisions when you have identified these aspects about yourself.

Physician and medical assisting is a key element of the evolving health care system. Physician and medical assistants lighten the load of the managing physician, act as the physician’s eyes and ears for at least the initial visit and help keep costs down for not only patients but insurance companies. With the aging population and the sheer increase in patient numbers, the demand for physician and medical assistants will continue to grow. The difference between working in physician and medical assisting is that the medical assistant is responsible for clerical and clinical duties. The physician assistant, on the other hand, not only manages medical assistants but can write prescriptions, make diagnoses, record medical histories, read x-rays and examine patients.

Studying Physician and Medical Assisting

To earn a degree and work in physician and medical assisting, two years of schooling is generally required plus hands-on experience in a health care environment. Accredited programs are generally associated with medical schools. Most physician and medical assisting students have a bachelor’s degree and some programs require it. Prerequisites such as math, biology, psychology, English and chemistry should be taken before applying to any physician and medical assisting program. A typical physician and medical assisting program consists of courses in pharmacology, medical ethics, human anatomy, geriatrics and disease prevention. There is also a clinical element in which the student works under supervision in areas such as emergency medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology.

Working in Physician and Medical Assisting

It is not possible to work as a physician assistant or medical assistant unless you pass the Physician Assistants National Certifying Examination and graduate from an accredited program. Just as doctors can specialize in a preferred area of medicine, so can physician and medical assistants. Some specialty areas include internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine and surgery. Physician and medical assistants often work in hospitals, offices, medical facilities and public clinics.

Online Continuing Education in Physician and Medical Assisting

While there aren’t accredited programs online for physician and medical assistants, there are online programs for degree completion and continuing education once certification has been achieved. Many working in physician and medical assisting will complete master’s degrees online and further specialize in such areas as public health or administration. Many universities offer online and distance learning programs for these purposes.

Do you want to get involved in business like TheExpertMarsalis? Or better yet, are you already involved in the business world like AcademicAdviceDrew? Regardless of your answers, there is a way to become better involved in the world of business and start at a pay rate that might actually afford a comfortable lifestyle! It starts with higher education, and if you have yet to complete your bachelor’s degree, you can pursue a business bachelor degree online.

Pursuing your degree online equates to you being able to work or develop your own personal business plan while attending classes at your leisure, and from the location of your choice. You might even decide to go to class everyday while you’re on your lunch break! Multitasking is a definite key to success in the business world. And learning to do so while working toward your bachelor business degree will only help you get a head start on any future competition.

One thing you should keep in mind when looking for an online bachelor of business degree program, is that you’ll need a degree from a reputable and accredited online university! You shouldn’t worry or fret, because there are so many fine institutions available you may have trouble choosing; regardless, you don’t want to skimp on your education because you think you found a better bargain at a new online college! Research all of your options and compare the curriculums before you make any final decisions.

A business bachelor degree online will prepare you to compete in today’s contemporary job market. Without a doubt, so much of business is about team work, but it will be completely necessary to compete for a spot on that team at some point in your career. Earning a degree is a sign to a potential employer that you can complete a task when it is presented and you will see a project to its completion.
